Lecture Title

The Interplay of Xue and Shu: Dialogues on the Relationships Between Substance and Function, and Between Knowledge and Action

Lecture Abstract

Guided by the dialectical thinking of intellectual enlightenment master Liang Qichao on the interactive and interdependent relationship between xue (learning/theory) and shu (practice/application), this lecture takes the categorical system of rhetorical competence as an example. It explores the substance (ti) of the theoretical principles underlying the categorical system of rhetorical competence from the perspective of xue (learning/theory), and investigates the function (yong) realized through the implementation of research paradigms from the perspective of shu (practice/application)—specifically, the construction of rhetorical meaning to expand practical functions. On this basis, the lecture elucidates the substance-function relationship in the construction and developmental generation of the categorical system of rhetorical competence, as well as the knowledge-action relationship between theoretical construction and practical analysis. It ultimately reveals the essential characteristics of academic research: achieving the goals of exploring new knowledge, innovating theory, and enriching social practice through the continuous accumulation of intellectual principles and the ongoing enhancement of knowledge production skills.
