Led by Professor Hu Kaibao, the corpus research team has been actively engaged in corpus-related research while promoting academic exchange in the field of corpus research and application. Since the inaugural National Summer Institute on Corpus-based Translation Studies in 2012, the team has consistently organized annual training activities on corpus research and application for over a decade, garnering positive social feedback and a strong reputation.
To further advance the application of corpora in foreign language teaching, research, and other related fields, and to strengthen academic exchange in this area, the Institute of Language Sciences at Shanghai International Studies University plans to host a Corpus Construction and Application Training Program in April 2025. The training will be conducted online. Please refer to the official website and WeChat public account of the Institute of Language Sciences for specific dates. The program will combine expert lectures, case discussions, and hands-on practice, introducing research methods and covering specific operations such as corpus construction, application, and data analysis. It will explore various approaches to applying corpora across different fields, aiming to enhance the ability of foreign language educators, students, and researchers to use corpora in their academic work.

About the Speakers
Hu Kaibao
Professor, Doctoral Supervisor, Shanghai International Studies University. He is a Distinguished Professor under the Ministry of Education’s Major Talent Program, Chief Expert of a Major Project of the National Social Science Fund of China, and Head of the Ministry of Education’s Huang Danian-style Faculty Team. He currently serves as Assistant to the President of Shanghai International Studies University, Dean of the Institute of Language Sciences, Executive Member of the Translators Association of China, Executive Member of the China Association for Comparative Studies of English and Chinese and Director of its Foreign Language Discipline Development Research Committee, and President of the Shanghai Science and Technology Translators Association. He is Editor-in-Chief of the international journal Corpus-based Studies across Humanities, a member of the editorial board of Corpora, a member of the editorial boards of the CSSCI journals Foreign Languages in China and Shanghai Journal of Translators, Editor-in-Chief of the Advances in Applied Linguistics book series (Routledge) and the Corpora and Intercultural Studies book series (Springer), and a member of the editorial board of the Advances in Corpus Linguistics book series (Routledge).
Professor Hu has long been engaged in research in corpus-based translation studies and discourse studies. He has led 25 research projects, including Major Projects of the National Social Science Fund, special projects of the National Development and Reform Commission, special projects of the National Language Commission, and special projects of the International Communication Bureau of the Publicity Department of the Central Committee. He has published nearly 120 papers in prestigious academic journals such as Babel, Perspectives, Meta, Foreign Language Teaching and Research, Journal of Foreign Languages, and Chinese Translators Journal. He is the author of ten academic works, including Introduction to Corpus-based Translation Studies, Corpus-based Translation Studies, and Introduction to Corpus-based Critical Translation Studies. He has also served as Editor-in-Chief for the national “Eleventh Five-Year Plan” textbook series New Horizon College English Extensive Reading and the New Era College Applied English textbook series. He currently leads special projects of the National Language Commission and the National Development and Reform Commission, focusing on language data sharing platforms and high-quality corpus construction.
In 2009, he received the Shanghai Yucai Award. In 2013, he was awarded the Second Prize for Outstanding Higher Education Achievement by Shanghai. In 2015, he received the Third Prize for Outstanding Scientific Research Achievement (Humanities and Social Sciences) from the Ministry of Education (7th Award Cycle). In 2022, he received the Second Prize for Outstanding Achievement in Philosophy and Social Sciences from Shanghai (15th Award Cycle). In 2024, he received the Second Prize for Outstanding Research Achievement in Humanities and Social Sciences from the Ministry of Education (9th Award Cycle).
Han Ziman
Professor, Doctoral Supervisor, Institute of Language Sciences, Shanghai International Studies University. He is a member of the Third Steering Committee for Master’s Programs in Translation and Interpreting Education under the Ministry of Education, Executive Member of the China Association for Comparative Studies of English and Chinese, Council Member of the Translators Association of China, member of the Translation Theory and Translation Teaching Committee and the International Discourse System Research Committee of the Translators Association of China, Vice President of the Henan Translators Association, and Secretary-General of the Shanghai Science and Technology Translators Association. He serves on the editorial boards of Shanghai Journal of Translators, Foreign Language Studies, and English World, and is Associate Editor-in-Chief of Frontiers of Corpus Studies. He has led and completed three projects at or above the provincial/ministerial level and currently leads a Key Project of the National Social Science Fund of China and two projects funded by the Compilation and Translation Bureau of the Central Committee. He has published over 90 academic papers, six monographs, and nine translated works, completing over three million words of translation. In recent years, his research has focused on corpus-based translation studies, translation and war, and the translation of Chinese literature into foreign languages.
Li Xiaoqian
Ph.D., Assistant Research Fellow, Institute of Language Sciences, Shanghai International Studies University. She holds a Ph.D. in Foreign Languages and Literatures from Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Her research interests include corpus-based translation studies, diplomatic discourse, and image studies. She leads a Youth Project of the National Social Science Fund of China titled “A Study on the International Influence of English Translations of Core Diplomatic Terms Since the Founding of the People’s Republic of China” and has received a China Postdoctoral Science Foundation General Grant (Second Class) for her project “A Study on the Image of Contemporary China in Diplomatic Discourse from a Discourse Analysis Perspective.”
Lei Lei
Ph.D., Professor, Doctoral Supervisor, Shanghai International Studies University. His research interests include corpus linguistics, quantitative linguistics, and digital humanities in language studies. He has published five monographs with Cambridge University Press and other publishers. He has published over 40 research articles and over ten book reviews in SSCI journals such as Applied Linguistics, Journal of Second Language Writing, Language Teaching, Journal of English for Academic Purposes, International Journal of Corpus Linguistics, and Corpus Linguistics and Linguistic Theory, with two articles selected as ESI Highly Cited Papers. He has also published over ten articles and book reviews in CSSCI-indexed journals. He has led and completed multiple research projects, including those funded by the National Social Science Fund of China. He serves as an editorial board member for journals including Journal of English for Academic Purposes (SSCI) and as Associate Editor of Corpus-based Studies across Humanities (De Gruyter). He has been recognized as a Highly Cited Chinese Researcher by Elsevier and ranked among the world’s top 2% most cited scientists.
Qin Hongwu
Ph.D., Professor, School of Foreign Languages, Qufu Normal University. He is the leading expert of the Shandong Provincial Key Discipline “Foreign Linguistics and Applied Linguistics” and a Shandong Provincial Teaching Master. His research interests include digital humanities, contrastive linguistics, and translation studies. He has published nearly 100 papers in core domestic and international journals, authored or edited nine books, textbooks, and translations, and led and completed multiple projects, including Key Projects of the National Social Science Fund of China, General Projects, and sub-projects for Major Bidding Projects. He has received numerous provincial/ministerial awards for outstanding achievements in social sciences. He serves on the editorial board of Foreign Language Teaching and Research, and holds leadership roles including President of the Corpus Translation Studies Committee of the China Association for Comparative Studies of English and Chinese, and Vice President or Executive Member of several other academic associations.
Li Tao
Ph.D., Associate Professor, Master’s Supervisor. He has been selected for the Shanghai Pujiang Talent Program and has conducted academic exchanges at the University of Manchester, Lancaster University, and the University of Auckland. He leads multiple research projects, including those funded by the National Social Science Fund of China and the Ministry of Education’s Humanities and Social Sciences Planning Fund. He has published over 30 papers in journals such as Target, Perspectives, JoSTrans, Babel, Discourse & Society, Discourse, Context & Media, Journal of Zhejiang University, Modern Foreign Languages, and Foreign Language Research, and has co-authored two monographs with Springer and other renowned publishers. He serves as an external reviewer for doctoral dissertations at the Department of Translation and Language Sciences, Pompeu Fabra University, Spain, and as a peer reviewer for over 20 SSCI and SCI journals, including Target, The Translator, Perspectives, Discourse & Society, Text & Talk, and Computational Intelligence.
Tian Xujun
Ph.D., Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Associate Professor at Shanghai Lixin University of Accounting and Finance. His research interests include corpus-based translation studies, corpus-based discourse analysis, and the study of China’s image. He has published nearly 20 academic papers in domestic and international journals such as Foreign Languages in China, Shanghai Journal of Translators, Foreign Language World, Frontiers in Psychology, and Corpora. He has led or participated in over ten research projects at various levels and has been involved in the construction of multiple large-scale corpora and terminology databases.
Su Hang
Ph.D., University of Birmingham; Postdoctoral Fellow, Beihang University. He is currently Director of the Center for Foreign Language Studies, Professor, Doctoral Supervisor, Postdoctoral Supervisor, and member of the University Academic Committee at Sichuan International Studies University. His research interests include corpus linguistics, systemic functional linguistics, (corpus) pragmatics, and English for Academic Purposes. He has led and completed three research projects, including those funded by the National Social Science Fund of China, and has published over 50 papers in journals such as Applied Linguistics and Foreign Language Teaching and Research. In 2019, he was selected for the Chongqing Talent Program (Youth Top Talent). In 2024, he was selected as a Reserve Candidate for Chongqing’s Academic and Technical Leaders. He has received the Second Prize for National Teaching Achievement in Higher Education (Graduate Level, 2023), the Second Prize for Outstanding Social Science Achievement from Chongqing (2024), the Third Prize for Higher Education Teaching Achievement from Chongqing (2022), and the First Prize for Outstanding Research Achievement from Sichuan International Studies University (2022, 2024).
